Escape from Alcatraz
Olga Tseyukova, Chair of Trustees on the Board of Depaul Ukraine is making a bid to become the first Ukrainian woman to swim from the legendary island of Alcatraz to the shores of San Fransisco in August 2012 - and at the same time raise funds for Depaul Ukraine.
She will take up the challenge of to Escape from Alcatraz later this month. Having only learned to swim a couple of years ago, she is training intensly for this monumental undertaking.
Her adventure entails a swim from the legendary prison island off the Californian coastline to the shores of San Francisco Bay. Although only 1.5 miles across the bay, it\'s still treacherous because of the strong tides and chilly waters - a very good reason why Alcatraz was chosen to house a prison! It was once home to some of the most notorious criminals when the federal penitentiary operated there from 1934 to 1963 with infamous inmates like Al \"Scarface\" Capone, George \"Machine Gun\" Kelley, and the \"Birdman\" Robert Stroud.
She has set herself an ambitious sponsorship target of £10,000 which will go towards the work of Depaul Ukraine. Depaul Ukraine which provides a safety net for street children, disadvantaged young people & homeless adults in Kharkiv, Kiev & Odessa.
