Pope Reflects on Giving Witness to Christ

Addressing thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis called on faithful to proclaim Christ’s Resurrection with “boldness and courage.” The crowds gathered for the Sunday recitation of the Regina Caeli, which takes the place of the Angelus during the Easter season. Reflecting on the Sunday reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Father commented on the response by Peter and the Apostles when they were ordered to stop teaching in Christ’s name, despite facing flagellation and imprisonment. “I ask myself: Where did the first disciples find the power for this witness of theirs? And, moreover: Where did their joy and courage to preach despite the obstacles and violence come from?” the Holy Father said.

Pope Francis: \'Inconsistency by Pastors and Faithful Undermines Churchs Credibility\'

On Sunday evening, Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of the four major Papal basilicas in Rome. The Holy Father took possession of the Basilica of St. John Lateran and is expected to celebrate Mass at the remaining two papal basilicas. The Basilica of St. Paul, whose archpriest is American Cardinal James Harvey, contains the tomb of St. Paul underneath its altar. “We are at the tomb of Saint Paul, a great yet humble Apostle of the Lord, who proclaimed him by word, bore witness to him by martyrdom and worshipped him with all his heart,” the Holy Father said as he began his homily.

Habemus Papum

The bells of St. Peters started ringing and the crowds began cheering just moments after 7 p.m. local time, as white smoke from the Sistine Chapel indicated Habemus Papam. We have a Pope! Just over an hour later, the 267th Successor of St. Peter has been announced by the senior cardinal deacon: It is Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, who had been serving as the archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He takes the name Francis.
