Pope Francis: John Paul II to Become World Youth Days\' \'Great Patron Saint\'

Prior to the recitation of the Angelus at the conclusion of the Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter\'s Square, Pope Francis addressed the faithful and gave special greetings. The Holy Father first greeted 250 delegates, consisting of bishops, priests, religious and laypeople, who participated in the meeting regarding World Youth Days that the Pontifical Council for the Laity had organized. He noted, \"In this begins the journey of preparation for the next world gathering, which will take place in June 2016 in Krakow and will have as its theme \'Blessed are the merciful, for they will find mercy (Matthew 5:7).\'\"

Pope Francis\' Homily at Palm Sunday

This week begins with the festive procession of olive branches: the whole people welcome Jesus. The children, the young people sing, they praise Jesus. But this week then moves forward into the mystery of the death of Jesus and of his resurrection. We have heard the Passion of the Lord. We will do well to pose just a single question: Who am I? Who am I before my Lord? Who am I before Jesus who enters into Jerusalem? Am I capable of expressing my joy, of praising him? Or do I distance myself from him? Who am I before Jesus who suffers?

A Glimpse of Lenten Tradition of the English-Speaking Faithful in Rome

It is evident that Catholics are acknowledging Lent in various ways throughout the Eternal City. However, some may not realize that there is a particular Lenten tradition in which English-speakers have been participating. The Pontifical North American College has been following the tradition of the Roman station churches. Information about the station churches, including the the history of Roman stational liturgy history, the schedule, times, and history of the churches themselves, can be found on PNAC’s website.

Adam and Eve and the Innkeeper

I never thought about it this way but Susan Stabile offers a guest post about the only two great sins - the sin of Adam and Eve and the sin of the Innkeeper – and that all other sins are a manifestation of these two. She writes… In Freedom and Forgiveness: A Fresh Look at the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Fr. Paul Farren suggests that just as there are two great commandments, there are only two great sins – the sin of Adam and Eve and the sin of the Innkeeper – and that all other sins are a manifestation of these two.

Pope Names Members of Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors

On Saturday, the Holy See announced that Pope Francis has named the members of the newly created Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. The commission was first announced by Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston, who is a member of the Council of Cardinals, also known as the G8.

Beyond the Great Lenten Facebook Fast

We are fast approaching Ash Wednesday, and it is time to start planning your Lenten fast. Lent is about recommitting to prayer, fasting so as to make room for God and almsgiving to relearn self-giving love — and for many of us, the biggest obstacle to prayer is social media, the biggest time-waster (and stressor) is our phone and computer, and the location of our frivolous, self-centered spending has moved online. So as so many Catholics gear up to turn off Facebook for Lent here are some more nuanced ideas for what to give up for Lent (as previously published at Catholic Vote).

Lent and the Lesson of Lampedusa

The Superior General of the Congregation of the Mission reflects on “Lent and the Lesson Lampedusa”. “Lent’s gifts are paradoxical, but they reaffirm a great truth: in bringing both our poverty and riches to the Lord, we are renewed and strengthened as followers of Jesus in the Vincentian way. May Christ’s riches and poverty be yours, bringing you blessings and a fruitful Lent! ”

Pope Francis\' Homily at Mass with Cardinals

Here is the translation of the Holy Father\'s homily at the Mass celebrated today in St. Peter\'s Basilica with the newly created Cardinals. * * * Merciful Father, by your help, may we be ever attentive to the voice of the Spirit (From Opening Prayer). This prayer, the opening prayer of todays Mass, reminds us of something fundamental: we are called to listen to the Holy Spirit who enlivens and guides the Church. By his creative and renewing power, the Spirit always sustains the hope of Gods People as we make our pilgrim way through history, and, as the Paraclete, he always supports the witness of Christians. In this moment, together with the new Cardinals, we want to listen to the voice of the Spirit as he speaks to us through the Scriptures we have just heard.

Neurotheology Conference to Be Held at Pontifical Athenaeum

A conference regarding the scientific study of near-death experiences will be held tomorrow at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. Presenting at the conference will be Professor Robert J. Hesse, Ph.D., co-founder and President of the Contemplative Network. According to a press release by the University, while advanced degrees have been granted in neurotheology, it is still widely debated.
